Diabetic Foot – A Silent Danger That Needs Urgent Attention #MahavirHospitalKamshet #DrVikeshMutha

Kamshet, Pune District: Diabetes is no longer a disease of the cities  it has silently spread to rural and semi-urban regions too. Among its many complications, Diabetic Foot remains one of the most dangerous yet neglected conditions, warns Dr Vikesh Mutha, emergency and trauma care specialist at Mahavir Hospital, Kamshet.

“Many diabetic patients ignore small wounds or blisters on their feet until they become infected. What starts as a small cut can quickly turn into a life-threatening situation,” says Dr Mutha.

What Is a Diabetic Foot?

A Diabetic Foot is a complication of long-term, uncontrolled diabetes where poor blood circulation and nerve damage (neuropathy) affect the feet. Because of reduced sensation, patients often fail to notice injuries, burns or ulcers allowing infection to spread rapidly.

If untreated, this can lead to deep ulcers, gangrene, or even amputation.

Early Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore

Dr Mutha highlights a few warning signs:

  • Numbness, tingling or burning in the feet

  • Dry, cracked skin or blackened areas

  • Non-healing wounds or ulcers

  • Swelling, redness or foul-smelling discharge

  • Pain or change in foot colour or temperature

“Even if the wound looks minor, diabetic patients should never self-treat or delay consulting a doctor,” he stresses.

Why Diabetics Are at Risk

Long-term high blood sugar damages the small blood vessels and nerves that supply the legs and feet. This leads to:

  • Poor circulation → delayed wound healing

  • Loss of sensation → unnoticed injuries

  • Weak immunity → higher infection risk

Combined, these make the foot highly vulnerable  especially among elderly patients or those with kidney or heart issues.

Diagnosis and Treatment

At Mahavir Hospital, Kamshet, diabetic foot evaluation involves:

  • Detailed foot examination and nerve testing

  • Doppler studies to check blood flow

  • Wound culture and dressing for infected ulcers

  • Antibiotic and sugar control management

  • Debridement or minor surgical procedures for severe cases

“Early detection saves both the foot and the patient’s life. We focus on complete wound care, sugar control, and rehabilitation,” explains Dr Mutha.

Prevention – The Best Cure

Dr Mutha shares simple but life-saving tips:

✅ Inspect your feet daily for cuts, blisters, or colour changes
✅ Wash and dry feet gently, especially between toes
✅ Never walk barefoot — even indoors
✅ Wear soft, well-fitting footwear
✅ Control blood sugar and visit your doctor regularly
✅ Avoid smoking, as it worsens circulation

A Community Health Concern

In rural and hilly areas like Kamshet, diabetic patients often reach hospitals too late due to lack of awareness. Mahavir Hospital has started awareness drives and screening camps to educate people about foot care, early detection, and lifestyle changes.

“We’ve treated many cases where timely attention prevented major surgery or amputation,” says Dr Mutha. “That’s why awareness is the first medicine.”

The Takeaway

Diabetes is manageable but its complications can be fatal if ignored.
A Diabetic Foot is not just a wound; it’s a warning sign from your body.
“Control your sugar, care for your feet, and consult your doctor early  that’s the real path to living healthy with diabetes,” concludes Dr Vikesh Mutha.
